Why Should we Core Aerate?
Homeowners often overlook problems associated with soil compaction of the soil. Insects, diseases, improper watering or a lack of fertilizer are often blamed for a lawns decline when the real culprit is compaction of the soil. The problem starts with the top 4 inches of the soil become compressed, not allowing the movement of air, water and nutrients to the grass roots. This stresses the grass plants, making them less able to compete with weeds and slow to recuperate from any injury. Over time a compacted lawn becomes worn, thin and just plain tired. The easy healthy solution is core aeration!
What is Core Aeration?
Lawn core aeration involves the plugging of small soil cores out of the lawn. Cores are removed mechanically with commercial equipment; extracting 1/2 to 3/4 inch diameter cores of soil and depositing them on the top of your lawn. Aeration holes are typically 1-4 inches deep.
What can Core Aeration do for my lawn?
As lawns age or sustain heavy use from play, sports activities, pets, and heavy accumulation of snow, soil compaction will result. Compaction greatly reduces the porous space within the soil that would normally would hold air. Grass roots require oxygen to grow and absorb nutrients and water. Compaction reduces total porous space in the soil and the amount of air within the soil. It has a very negative impact on nutrient uptake and water infiltration, in addition to being a physical barrier for root growth. This results in poor top growth and deterioration in your lawn. Core aeration can benefit your lawn immediately by:
- Loosening compacted soil enhancing the infiltration of rainfall or irrigation by reducing water runoff.
- Increasing the availability of nutrients to the roots of the grass.
- Preventing fertilizer and pesticide run off from overly compacted areas.
- Elevating oxygen levels in the soil, stimulating root growth and enhancing the activity of thatch decomposing organisms.
- While removing cores of soil you are cultivating the soil. The tines of the aerator also sever roots, rhizomes and stolons. Grass plants are stimulated to produce new shoots and roots that “fill up” the holes in the lawn and increase the density of the turf.
- Increasing the lawn's drought tolerance, improves its overall health and resistance to disease.
Overseeding is the practice of sowing additional grass seed over existing grass to boost and restore your lawn. It is a great service to add to lawn core aeration.
The grass blades on your lawn get weak and will perish with age. Making the lawn vulnerable to insects, disease and undesirable weeds. Areas in your yard that have damage from from temperatures, foot traffic or other disruptions also benefit from overseeding. It re-establishes a great foundation and elevates the overall health and beauty of your lawn.
